About the Precinct
The Metro Township of Kearns covers roughly 4.8 square miles with a population just over 36,000. Kearns has a longstanding history of being served by the Unified Police Department, and prior to 2010, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The Kearns Precinct is located at 4250 West 5415 South. One Chief, one Lieutenant (Executive Officer), and one Administrative Assistant are housed within the Kearns Precinct.
Patrol in Kearns is comprised of five Sergeants, eighteen Patrol Officers, and one full-time Traffic Officer. To best suit the needs and safety of Kearns, the community is broken down into five patrol districts. This allows the patrol officers to become more familiar and take ownership of the districts they serve.
Patrol Officers are the first responders to incidents, as they are dispatched by the Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC). They are also one of the most visible representatives of the Kearns Precinct, as they proactively patrol the district they are assigned. Patrol officers are provided extensive training in many different skill sets and attend mandatory training throughout their careers to be able to handle the myriad of incidents and situations they encounter.
Community Oriented Policing
Community policing is a philosophy adopted by the Unified Police Department that promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.
In addition to every employee adopting this philosophy, Kearns Precinct dedicates one detective solely dedicated to community related issues. This detective works alongside community leaders, the Kearns Metro Township Council and Kearns Community Council.
Kearns has two middle schools and one high schools who are serviced by two full time Student Resource Officers (SRO). In addition to keeping our schools safe they enjoy teaching, interacting, and forming positive relationships with our young adults.
Two investigative units are housed within the Kearns Precinct; Kearns Investigations and the Directed Enforcement Unit. Both of these units are comprised of two sergeants, one victim advocate, and twelve detectives.
The Kearns Investigations Unit is tasked with investigating all acts of domestic violence, property crimes, and fraud. The Directed Enforcement Unit (DEU) conducts complex investigations that supports the safety of the Kearns community. The DEU team targets career criminals and violent offenders, conducts high risk arrest warrants, conducts surveillance, search warrant service along with intelligence collection and analysis.
In addition, Kearns is served by the Unified Police Department’s Investigations Unit which has over fifty specialized detectives. This expert unit investigates serious crimes against persons through the Violent Crimes Unit, Cold Case Investigations, Special Victims Unit, Metro Gang Unit, Forensic Investigations Unit, Mental Health Unit, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, and the Salt Lake Metro Narcotics Task Force (DEA).
