MIGUEL HERNANDEZ & EMETERIO HERNANDEZ

Miguel Antonio Hernandez, age 18, is a cousin to Emeterio Melgar Hernandez whose body was located two days earlier off a road in nearby East Canyon in Salt Lake County, Utah. It is possible the two homicides happened in the same time frame, and the case is being investigated as a double homicide. Miguel was an El Salvador nationalist and had recently relocated to Salt Lake City from Santa Ana, California. He came with Emeterio Melgar Hernandez. Emeterio and Miguel attended a dance together on August 13, 1982. This was the last known sighting of the victim.
Miguel’s body was found by hikers in some bushes approximately 100 yards off the road between East and Emigration Canyon on August 17, 1982. The cause of death was determined to be gunshot wounds. His cousin’s body was found a short distance away. Emeterio, age 33, was from El Salvador and worked as a dishwasher at the Salt Lake Hilton in Salt Lake City. He was a husband and father to eight children. He was last seen by his co-workers on August 14, 1982. His body was discovered on August 19, 1982, about five miles above Junction I-80 and U-65. He died as a result of gunshot wounds. This case is considered to be a double homicide.
