Our officers also assist the Canyon Patrol units in responding to calls in nearby canyons, which include Emigration, Parley's, Millcreek, and Big & Little Cottonwood Canyons.
We pride ourselves on community service, working closely with local community councils, and neighborhood groups to deliver the level of law enforcement they expect and deserve.
One captain, one lieutenant, and seven sergeants supervise the Millcreek Precinct. Thirty-six patrol officers, six detectives, two Community Oriented Policing (COP) officers, one School Resource officer, and one secretary also work within our jurisdiction.
Our team enjoys extensive law enforcement experience. officers capitalize their years of training and knowledge from previous assignments, to help solve crimes, complete traffic investigations, and run a highly successful Community Oriented Policing program. Our functional diversity is a tremendous benefit to the varying communities in which we serve.
Our operations mission is a top priority in 2012. Surveys conducted continually rank traffic problems, speeding, drugs/alcohol and crime reduction as the priority concerns of this community. We focus intently on the prevention of traffic accidents and congestion, while aggressively enforcing speed compliance. This was accomplished by our commited traffic enforcement team. These experienced officers place educational “speed trailers” near trouble zones. These trailers use radar to remind drivers of their speeds, and work as an excellent speed-reducing tool, keeping our streets, pedestrians, and other drivers’ safe. The traffic enforcement team also target traffic issues, such as school zone safety, red-light violations, aggressive drivers, and speed compliance.
The Millcreek Township officers engaged in pro-active patrol techniques that resulted in numerous arrests of suspects involved in continuous criminal activities. For example, working with our district detectives, they developed crime patterns of vehicle and residential burglars to solve crimes and put suspects in jail. Numerous drug investigations have resulted in arrests, assisting in removing illegal drugs from Millcreek streets.
Our main concept of Community Oriented Policing is “The Team.” This team involves UPD officers and members of the community that we serve.
We are very pro-active with our C.O.P. philosophy by working closely with citizens, business owners, schools and a myriad of other individuals and organizations. We work in conjunction with each other to obtain our goals and objectives in reducing crime and the fear of crime.
Millcreek Township C.O.P. officers provide, and get involved with, several programs for our citizens that help to create this teamwork atmosphere. These include Neighborhood Watch, Mobile Neighborhood Patrols, the officer friendly program and other crime prevention and safety programs. These committed members also work with zoning, code enforcement, adult parole and probation and a variety of other organizations.
Drugs and under age alcohol violations are among the top priorities with this unit. We actively enforce laws pertaining to these as well as provide programs and workshops for education and prevention. We maintain the EASY grant (Eliminating Alcohol Sales from Youth from the State of Utah and participate in “America Buckle Up” campaign. These programs are funded by the State and provide valuable resources to assist us with our goals.
The Millcreek Precinct C.O.P. developed the Citizen’s Police Academy for the Office of the Sheriff and is currently preparing its 14th session with twenty-five participants. We are proud that the Sheriff has had extremely favorable comments and feedback from the participants in regards to this program and that he has expanded it office-wide.
For more information about any programs, please call us at 272-5225.
We have found that decentralizing our property crimes detectives and having them assigned at the precinct level has worked well and paid dividends. It keeps everyone in the precinct working close and gives more accountability and ownership of assigned areas and cases. Moreover, the investigators are teamed with C.O.P. officers in specific areas, as a result of working together; they have solved numerous cases and been instrumental in preventing crime.
These officers collaborate together to work vice activity as well. With nine bars and clubs in Wasatch District, dealing with issues that arise, and providing enforcement can be challenging and resource intensive. However we are pleased to report our proactive approach and enforcement in these establishments are proceeding smoothly and efficiently.
All investigators are housed on the second floor of the Millcreek Precinct sub-station along with the C.O.P. officers. A full time civilian support staff member is also part of this team. We all enjoy working together as a cohesive group and are looking forward to the future, to implement ideas and strategies, to accomplish our goals of reducing crime and the fear of crime, to make our communities in Millcreek Township a safer and more enjoyable place to live, work and visit.
Last Friday May 4, 2012 Millcreek had a recruitment drive to attempt to gain larger numbers to our Neighborhood Watch program. If you are interested in joining visit our community watch web page and contact the Unified Police Department Crime Prevention Services at 801-468-3901.

A 9 year old male was heating some oil on the stove to cook French fries. He sat down to watch TV when the fire broke out on the stove. The 9 year old had come home around noon and his 17 year old brother was suppose to be at the residence to watch him, but was not there. The boy ran to an upstairs apartment and alerted a 63 year old male tenant that the apartment was on fire. As the older tenant ran down to the apartment he knocked on the other apartment doors to alert other tenants.
The older tenant fought his way into the apartment through the thick smoke and was able to put out most of the fire out prior to the Unified Fire Authority crews arriving on scene. UFA personnel advised that if not for the efforts of the older tenant the whole apartment building (12 units total) would likely have caught fire within minutes. No injuries were reported. The apartment unit was uninhabitable due to fire and smoke damage.
Visit the Unified Fire Authority website for more information on preventing fires.

An off-duty officer identified and apprehended a vehicle thief Wednesday afternoon in Millcreek. The off-duty officer was returning to his home when he was cut off by a black Chrysler 300. After running the license plate the Chrysler returned as a stolen vehicle. The officer called for assistance and followed the car into the parking lot of a Fresh Market grocery store and observed the vehicle drive out of view in the dead-end area on the west side of the store. Another officer was only a block away and responded to assist and located the vehicle parked facing the building and positioned his vehicle behind the stolen car.The male driver was sitting in the driver's seat and was called out of the vehicle and arrested without incident.

Detectives from the Metro Gang Unit (MGU) and the ATF arrested two fugitives on felony warrants after holding surveillance on the residence where they were believed to be staying. A search of the residence turned up three handguns, one of them listed as stolen, and distributable amounts of Methamphetamine.
A witness observed two suspects park a car in the area of 3333 S. Highland Dr. and walk south-east into the neighborhood. He correctly assumed they were up to no good and called UPD. Officers began to search the area for the suspects located some fresh graffiti in the area of 3500 S. Highland Dr. An officer located the two suspects walking westbound at 1580 E. Millcreek Wy. Both ditched several cans of spray paint and some latex gloves in a yard as they saw the police car.
Both suspects had fresh paint on their hands and several different types of caps in their pockets. Both have a history of graffiti arrests in the past while attending Skyline High. ID responded and took photos of 4 different locations that had been tagged by their crew “A2K”. Both males were booked into jail. Two of their friends were also located in the neighborhood and field carded, one being the owner of the car observed by the complainant.
A male suspect attempted suicide and barricaded himself in his bedroom Sunday night in Millcreek. The suspect and his wife earlier had got into a verbal altercation which resulted in her telling him to leave and that the relationship was over. The suspect decided he would not leave and instead told her he was killing himself, took an unknown large quantity of muscle relaxers and barricaded himself in his bedroom with at least three pistols. Responding units had all occupants leave the house and contained it. Several attempts to make contact with the suspect from the exterior of the home verbally, with a bullhorn and other methods were unsuccessful. In speaking with the wife, she informed us that when last she had spoken to him through the door, that he sounded like he was barely conscious and could not even make it to the door. She said he had locked both locks on the door and placed two metal chairs behind the door in order to keep it from opening.
After attempts to communicate with the suspect several officers entered the home and made announcements down the hallway toward the suspect’s door. Some movement and groaning could be heard in the room along with what sounded like breathing. A decision was made to force entry into the room. The wife of the suspect, who is the homeowner, granted permission to force entry through the door.
The door was breached and the suspect located semi-conscious on the floor of the bedroom in a puddle of vomit. UFA was summoned and the suspect transported to St. Marks hospital. ID responded for photos of the door and guns located in the room. Several bottles of pills located as well. The guns were removed from the home.
UPD SWAT and SLC SWAT served a Search Warrant for the UPD Narcotics Unit at a residence in Millcreek. Items seized include 79 Heroin-filled balloons. Thanks to the SWAT Teams, UPD K-9 , and SLC K-9 for their assistance.
Millcreek Detectives, with assistance from Investigations Narcotics, served a search warrant in Millcreek where methamphetamine, marijuana, spice and paraphernalia were seized. A handgun, listed as stolen out of Salt Lake City, was also seized.
The UPD was called to a bar on an assault involving two females. Once they arrived the UPD officers learned that one female still had to be physically detained in handcuffs because of her severe level of violence. The victim had been playing pool with the suspect when the suspect suddenly smashed her in the face with a beer stein, breaking her front tooth. Security immediately jumped in to detain the suspect, and the suspect fought off all of the security guards for several minutes.
Suspect continued to be violent with officers and the Unified Fire Authority (UFA); most notable was her spitting on the Fire Captain and kicking a Lieutenant. The Suspect had to be fitted with a spit hood and leg restraints. While loading the suspect in the vehicle, she head butted an officer and then tried to kick her in the back of the head once she was placed in the back seat.
Forensics was on scene for photos. Suspect booked into jail on assault charges and several counts of assault on a police officer.
Dispatch received a 911 call from a disconnected cell phone. A male told them there was a bomb in the Smith’s at 4500 S. and 900 E. then hung up. According to the Unified Fire Authority (UFA) the call came from a Cricket phone that has been used before to make another hoax bomb threat call at a Wal-Mart in the valley.
Officers arrived at the Smiths and immediately evacuated the store, sending all patrons home and having all employees gather at the east of the store to be interviewed. Officers then physically checked the building for any remaining customers or employees, finding none. UFA responded and contacted their explosives experts and a bomb dog.

He also admitted to being the driver in a stolen vehicle which rammed a SLCPD patrol vehicle yesterday and engaged in a pursuit. The stolen Chevy Trail Blazer was recovered by the Metro Gang Unit and SLCPD contacted for evidence. Huxhold was arrested in Millcreek for the robbery and two felony warrants. A UPD officer was patrolling the area when he noticed a Toyota Camry protruding into the intersection facing North. The officer remembered seeing the same vehicle stopped at the stop light approx. 20 minutes before. When attempting to make contact the female was passed out and unresponsive, the vehicle was in drive, the female had her foot on the brake but continued to be unresponsive. The vehicle started to move slowly, the officer attempted to break the window but several attempts failed. A second officer arrived and positioned his Durango directly in front of the female's vehicle and allowed it to run into the back of his patrol vehicle. At that point the female regained consciousness and was able to acknowledge the officers. The female driver appeared to be under the influence and after being evaluated by UFA she was taken into custody. There was no damage done to the office vehicle and only minor damage to the front bumper area of the Toyota. The quick thinking of these officers likely saved the driver from serious injury. UPD Forensics responded for photo’s and blood draw. Great job by all involved.

About 200 yards west of 1300 East the suspect vehicle pulled over to the south shoulder of the roadway and the driver fled on foot. Two passengers stayed in or near the suspect vehicle. Both passengers were secured. The suspect was caught after a brief foot pursuit into the trailer park.
