Beware of Scams!

02-Dec-2011

In this article officer Archuleta of the Midvale Precinct outlines current telemarketing scams to be aware of. In general, always be wary of anyone asking for your personal information over the phone. Common current scams include calls from foreign individuals with thick accents, those impersonating collection agencies or a government agency and using scare tactics. Other scams impersonate banks such as Wells Fargo and seem like legitimate request for you to provide your personal information.

UPD officers took a man into custody late Monday night after he attempted to cut his wife's throat. The UPD responded to a 911 call from the wife. Midvale City

The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake is pleased to announce it will be providing police services to the citizens of Midvale City. Settled in 1851, Midvale City is located in the center of the Salt Lake Valley and has a friendly "small-town" atmosphere. Starting as a center for mining and industry, modern Midvale City is home to a diverse group of over 30,000 residents of various ethnic backgrounds. Midvale is host to the annual Harvest Days, an event that is over 73 years old. Midvale shares a spirit of friendship and community of a city "in the middle of everything."

The Unified Police Department strives to make your home and work place a safer and better place to live and work. The Midvale Precinct consists of 1 Captain, 1 Lieutenant, 6 Sergeants, 4 Detectives, 3 Community Oriented Policing Detectives, 2 traffic/motor officers, and 22 patrol officers. We also have 1 full time Resource Officer assigned to Hillcrest High School and 1 full time Resource Officer assigned to the Midvale Middle school and the Elementary schools.

Traffic problems such as speeding in neighborhoods have always been a concern of the citizens of Midvale. We have 2 officers dedicated to working traffic enforcement. They focus intently on the prevention of traffic accidents and congestion, while aggressively enforcing speed compliance. These experienced officers place educational "speed trailers" near trouble zones. These trailers use radar to remind drivers of their speeds, and work as an excellent speed-reducing tool, keeping our streets, pedestrians, and other drivers safe. The traffic enforcement team also target traffic issues, such as school zone safety, red-light violations, aggressive drivers, and speed compliance.

We have a strong "COP" (Community Oriented Policing) program. With the help of citizens we work closely with you to help reduce crime in your neighborhoods and solve the problems that are caused by crime. We have 3 full time COP officers who identify community problems, work for a solution and implement the work necessary to solve the problems. The full time COP Officers also work closely with community organizations such as the schools, community councils, religious organizations, apartment complexes and neighborhoods to make sure that information is streamlined both ways on crime and the needs of the community. Along with the help of the Midvale Community Building Community Safety Committee, the COP officers train and manage the Neighborhood Watch program, and the Good Landlord Program. Both programs have proven to reduce crime in neighborhoods and apartment communities. The COP officers also provide public education by hosting public work shops on various topics to help our citizen know what to watch for and how to protect themselves from crime.

We provide D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness & Resistance Education) training to our elementary children in an effort to stop the epidemic of drug abuse at an early age.

Midvale City is now a member partner of the UPD. As such, the Mayor sits on the UPD Board and has direct oversight on important issues such as budget, policy and administration. This is an excellent model for effective policing, resource sharing, and cost-effective law enforcement that will serve citizens well into the future.

One of our major objectives is to build a model that is responsive to Midvale's specific needs and to truly provide all the same service that self providing offered but with more resources and greater expertise at a better cost.
