Burglary Suspect Captured in Magna

28-Jul-2011

A middle-aged man was caught burglarizing a home in Magna early Thursday afternoon. Neighbors observed the man climbing through a front window after knocking on the door and finding nobody home. They notified the UPD and two officers were on the scene within roughly 2 minutes. Within 5 minutes more officers arrived and they proceeded to surround and lock down the home. An officer saw the suspect in a basement window. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect through the bullhorn with no response. After contacting the home owner and verifying there were no residents in the home, a K9 unit performed a soft clear (K9 only with no officer) of the upper floor and a hard clear (K9 with an officer) of the basement where the K9 indicated the suspect was in the bathroom. The K9 was release upon the suspect causing wounds to his hands and chest and the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect first said he was a resident and then said the residents were expecting him. Although the home owner did know the suspect, he had not seen him for 8 years and was not expecting him. It appears as though the burglary was drug-related since drug paraphanelia was found in the bathroom in which the suspect was hiding and it appear the suspect was under the influence of methanphetamine or other drugs.

Thanks to observant neighbors and responsive officers this crime prevented.
